Spaulding Gray

In the beginning of this semester, I went to Luis Urrea's book signing at The Tribune Tower. As he discussed his latest book, "Queen of America," he recited a long passage from his work to the audience. We were all impressed with his memory, very Capote. We were also very engaged with his performance.

Unlike Luis, Spaulding Gray's performance was rather distracting. Like it was too theatrical for someone sitting down which is funny for me because usually I pay more attention if someone is more lively. I don't know why but I didn't really enjoy his monologue although I do like the idea of a monologue very much. But who am I to say, this guy's won awards!

When his books were being passed around, those looked pretty interesting. Maybe I'll read his literary works. I think in the future I'd see his monologues again but maybe close my eyes. Maybe that might help me.
