I found the story of Christopher McCandless, depicted by Jon Krakauer in his novel, Into the Wild, to be remarkable,
adventurous and sad. The novel was about a true story of McCandless, who was influenced
by the works and lives of Thoreau and Tolstoy heavily and began to see society
as a threat to the individual. He would give up the materialistic and corrupt
conceptions of the world, by going back into the wild, to find simplicity
within his life and be one with nature. However, he begins to see nature not
only as a friend but also as a powerful rage. As he realizes the importance of
family and relationships and decides to go back, he is entrapped and dies from
either starvation or poison, in his sleeping bag, which I found horrible and
was saddened greatly by. Sean Penn also gives life to McCandless in his movie
titled, Into the Wild. I have not watched the movie as of yet, but found the
trailer thrilling. After the semester ends, I will definitely watch the movie
with my 3 girls J,
and get a more understanding of the life of McCandless.
