I found Professor Urrea’s novel, Across the Wire: Life and
Hard Times on the Mexican Border, to be fascinating and exhilarating. He gives
the people of Tijuana, a voice and a glimpse of the difficult poverty, and
harsh living conditions they are in. His novel deeply expresses the injustice
and political chaos that exists across the Mexican borderlands and captures the
pride and individuality of the people. It is no wonder why these people risk
their lives and embark on the dangerous journey of crossing the borderlands in
trying to find a better life. Professor Urrea’s writing style was very
descriptive in accounting for the poverty that the Tijuana natives lived in,
like being thankful for “even garbage!” Professor Urrea’s generosity and
kindness towards these people gives some hope towards the inhumane lives they
are living. I have more respect and admiration for Professor Urrea for depicting the lives of the Tijuana people.
