Dear Chicago / Spalding Gray Style

Dear Chicago,

For 2 years I have lived with you and come to love something about you. I came to you to expand my knowledge, my education, my practice. I came to you crying from Canada, a place I didn't want to leave and wasn't sure why I was leaving. I wrestled with being here- the inescapable sprawl of suburbs and flat-lands that seemed to go on forever, segregation, violence- "getting real" after years in a city in which I had virtually no worry.

In grad school one of my friends jumped from her studio window and killed herself.

I cried all over everybody and everybody cried all over me. It didn't matter where I was, just that love surrounded me and surrounded everyone. You are human, you are precious.

You are real, Chicago.
