After hearing our Professor describe the process and experiences that led to the creation of this novel, I thought that I would be amply prepared to read the book. However, it was much more complex and moving than the first time I had heard some of these things. The way in which some of these horrific events were described seemed not only like a narration or autobiography, but instead like a knowledgeable outsider who can look into the situation and objectively lead the reader to think for themselves. "Poverty is personal," was the first place in the novel, with many to follow, where I had to remind myself that this was no work of fiction, and that the events were factual. Everything was able to hit home with me much further, as I realized that the world is not always a happy place. Some people are dealt worse cards than others, but can still find happiness and maintain a sense of faith through their perseverance.
I am 3/4 done with the book currently, and hope that once the ending arrives, I will have more to discuss.
